Abdominoplasty / Tummy tuck

Abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) is one of the more common cosmetic surgeries. Abdominoplasty is cosmetic surgery to remove fat and extra loose skin from the abdomen.  In most cases, it will restore weakened or separated muscles, and change the shape and tone of the abdomen to create a firmer and smoother profile. Many surgeons recommend that abdominoplasty should be considered only after dieting and exercise have achieved the right body shape underneath.
Before you opt for abdominoplasty, there are some important issues to keep in mind, including:

  • the results of an abdominoplasty are considered permanent. However, any major changes in your weight after surgery could change how you look. If you are planning substantial weight loss or considering future pregnancies, you should postpone the surgery;
  • abdominoplasty is not considered a treatment for stretch marks, although any stretch marks in the treated area will be removed along with excess skin.

During abdominoplasty surgery, incisions are made across the lower abdomen and around the tummy button. Excess skin and fat may be removed and stretched or torn muscles are pulled together and stitched in place. The remaining skin is then pulled down and a new hole is made for your tummy button.
You will be left with a scar around your tummy button and along the top of your bikini line, though this can usually be hidden by your underwear. If you maintain a healthy weight, your skin shouldn’t stretch again and your new shape will last.
